NBTS Activities.

Since the inception of the year 2007, the NBTS has engaged in various activities to continue her promotion of Blood Safety and Voluntary Non-remunerated Blood Donation in Nigeria. Amongst such activities are:

* The visit of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) USA team to NBTS from the 29th January, 2007 to 9 February, 2007.

The visit of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) USA team to NBTS from the 29th January, 2007 to 9 February, 2007.The team led by US Team Lead, Dr. Lawrence Marum as part of their activities visited the NBTS/SBFAF, had meeting with Implementing Partners, paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Minister for Health, visited Gwagwalada Hospital (IHVN) as well as selected NBTS Centres including NBTS Kaduna, NBTS Lokoja and NBTS Ibadan in company of the National Coordinator, NBTS and some key officers. The team was also a part of the Health Correspondents Workshop on Blood Safety at the Gateway Hotel, Abeokuta on 5th & 6th February, 2007.

The workshop which was organised for the Media Health Writersand Producers from different media houses in Nigeria (both electronic and print) was aimed at sensitising and training media personnel on how to report and promote the NBTS and it activities positively in Nigeria. This workshop was graced by various personalities from the Ogun State Ministry of Health and FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH [FMOH] . The event was followed by the taking-over ceremony of the NBTS Abeokuta Facilities in IbereKodo, donated by the Government of Ogun State.

* Formal Presentation of Blood Banking Equipment to selected States and Hospitals on the 10th March, 2007 by the Former Minister for Health, Prof. Eyitayo Lambo

Presentation of Blood Banking Equipment, NBTS Software and a Hilux 4x4 Pickup Van was conducted by the Former Minister of Health, to selected Hospitals and Health Institutions in Nigeria, including the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, to enhance quality Blood Service in the country.

* To increase accessibility of Safe Blood to those in need of blood transfusion in Nigeria, the NBTS has already commissioned 4 new Blood Transfusion Centres this year bringing NBTS Centres to seven so far. Listed below are the new Centres:

NBTS Lokoja, North Central State Centre, Commissioned on 13th March, 2007
NBTS, South-West Zonal Centre, Ibadan, Commissioned on 22nd March, 2007
NBTS, North Central Zonal Centre, Jos, Commissioned on 30th March 2007
NBTS, North-East Zonal Centre, Maiduguri, Commissioned on 27th April, 2007

*The FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH [FMOH] , through the NBTS, carried outa baseline survey with a view to identifying the challenges of safe blood transfusion practices and to determine whether our health institutions meet the basic safety standards and guidelines for collecting blood from blood donors, processing blood for transfusion and disposing of blood and its products appropriately. The record keeping ability of these health institutions was also assessed. The Report of Baseline Data Survey on Blood Transfusion Practice in Nigeria was launched with the Operational Guidelines for Blood Transfusion Practice in Nigeria on the 23rd May, 2007 by the Former Minister of Health, Prof. Eyitayo Lambo, assisted by the Former Minister of State for Health, Arc, Halima Tayo Alao.

World Blood Donor Day Celebration, 2008 started out with various events and part of it was a Press briefing by the Former Minister for Health, Alhaji Mohammed Lawan followed by a football match between staff of NBTS Abuja Centre and the NBTS Youth Club, Club 25.

The football match was followed by a road show and blood drive at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Abuja led by the former National Coordinator, NBTS, Dr. Folake Ayo.

NBTS Holds Maiden Stake Holders Conference on Blood Transfusion Services in Nigeria

The Maiden Stake Holders Conference on Blood Transfusion Services in Nigeria took place at the Top Rank Hotel in Abuja from 13th – 14th May, 2008 with the theme: “Advancing Partnership for Blood Safety”. The Conference was declared open by the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Muhhama Lawal CON.
In attendance were the Honourable Minister of Health, Permanent Secretary Health, Rep. Head of Department Health Services, National Coordinator NBTS, Deputy Director Lab Services FMOH, Chairman NBTS Technical Committee and Members and participants drawn from all over Nigeria which includes State Commissioners for Health, State Permanent secretaries for Health, State Directors and Chief Medical Directors of Health Services and Tertiary Institutions of Health, and NBTS Zonal Coordinators. The event also witnessed delegates all the way from Zimbabwe, and the Republic of South Africa including NBTS Implementing Partners, Partners and collaborators such as CDC, SBFAF, ENHANSE, NACA and NASCP. The President and some members of the Nigerian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion also graced the event.

The HMH in his keynote address urged the participants to deliberate and come up with suggestions to strengthen the National Blood Transfusion Service. The National Coordinator NBTS in her presentation state the Vision of the NBTS which is to have a quality National Blood Service that would comply with international standards and be acknowledged as one of the best in Africa. She also highlighted the progresses of the NBTS that includes establishment of 11 operational NBTS Centres spread across the six geopolitical zones of the country and some of the challenges which are promotion of Voluntary Non-remunerative Blood Donors, reduction of blood screened by rapid tests, and the need for centralised screening or centrally coordinated screening through NBTS approved Centres. The Deputy Director Lab Service Services also spoke on the Need for Quality Assurance in Blood Transfusion Processes.

7 papers covering critical areas critical area of the service like Voluntary Non-Remunerated Blood Donation, Social Marketing of Blood Donation and Corporate World and Blood Donation were delivered. The highlight of the 3rd plenary session on the 2nd day were the presentations on the hospital Linkage Programme and the situation reports from various health institutions on the status of blood services in their domain. This session was very interactive and it brought to the fore the poor level of blood transfusion practice nation wide which the NBTS is mandated to improve.

At the end of the sessions, the conference adopted a number of resolutions on how to strengthen the National Blood Transfusion Service.

COMMISSIONING, NBTS ABEOKUTA STATE CENTRE
The NBTS, Abeokuta centre, was commissioned by the Honorable Minister for Health, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin (OON) on Monday March 2, 2009.

Present at the occasion were the Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin (OON), the United States’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency, Robin Renee Sanders; Ogun State Commissioner of Health, Dr. (Mrs) Abiodun Oduwole; the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Health Matters, Dr. Dotun Malomo; the erstwhile National Co-ordinator  of NBTS now the Director of Hospital Services, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Folake Ayo, the Oshile of Oke-Ona Egba, Oba (Dr.) Adedapo Tejuoso; dignitaries from within and outside Ogun State, Senior Officers from the headquarters of NBTS, Abuja; Zonal and State Co-ordinators of NBTS from the South-West and South-East , The Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Club 25 as well as the Berachah Foundation were also represented.
